The Trusses are Here!!!

Well, the big day finally came. I'm sad I didn't get to take a picture of the big crane lifting the trusses off the flat bed onto the house. But wait, I am glad. It is so scary watching them swing the big bundles through the air towards your house. I got to partake in that pleasure when we first moved to Whidbey. We were helping Marsha and Rod build a house on Sandy Point. The trusses were absolutely huge (10:12 pitch). The trusses were "flying" through the air towards the house. Several times I thought the guy was going to take out the house, but he didn't. I'm sure it happens on occasion, but not that day - nor today. Our trusses are relatively small in comparison. But, Marsha still wore her "Scared Guy" t-shirt nonetheless. She always wears it to set the trusses.

Here she is after the fact...

This is what she looked like (in my imagination) during the setting of the trusses...
It's no easy task to separate those bundles and move them down the wall plate to their destination. Like I said, we helped them a couple of years ago. I thought I was going to die. Marsha and I were on the ground, in the garage, with a poke stick. Our job was to keep those top heavy trusses from toppling over. The poke stick is a long 2x4 with another small 2x4 nailed to it at a 45 degree angle. The crux of the stick is pushed up to the top of the truss. We were facing each other, on either side of the 2x4 (close quarters!) walking the truss down the line while the guys were moving the tails. I vowed I would never do that job again!

So, here's the view from the driveway...

And here's a better view of the front. The ladder is in the space where the front porch lives.

Tomorrow we have to mark the direction of all the window openings and the swing of all the exterior doors. It's not much, but then there's camper duty. We have to get the finishing touches on that or we're toast!

More to come. See you on the flip side.
